Allergic reactions are quite common in body either due to medication or some environmental elements. Most of the medications for allergic symptoms are available by prescription only but there is a drug called citrazine that is available over-the-counter. Allegra belongs to a group of medicines called fexofenadine. It is an effective antihistamine that reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body. Suitable for both adults and children, this drug used to treat the symptoms of seasonal allergies (hay fever), skin itching and hives caused by a condition called chronic idiopathic urticaria. It works by blocking histamine that is produced in body during an allergic reaction.

Symptoms associated with the medication are categorized as:
  • Rare: chest tightness, redness of face, neck, arms and chest, hive like swelling on face, legs, feet, tongue or lips, shortness of breath
  • More common: Vomiting

Atarax is an effective antihistamine and contains hydroxyzine that reduces activity in the central nervous system. Singulair, also known as Montelukast Sodium belongs to a group of medicines known as leukotriene receptor antagonist. Clarinex belongs to the category of medicines called Desloratadine that is prescribed to treat allergic reactions including perennial and seasonal rhinitis (hay fever), skin allergies such as rashes and hives. Considered as an effective antihistamine, this medicine reduces the effects of the natural chemical histamine in the body that is responsible for producing symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose.

Rare side effects of Clarinex:
  • Dyspnea, such as, shortness of breath, difficult or labored breathing, tightness in chest, wheezing
  • Edema, such as, swelling
  • Pruritus, such as, itching skin
  • Rash

  • Tachycardia, such as, fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat or pulse

Less common symptoms of clarinex:
  • Dizziness
  • Dyspepsia, such as, acid or sour stomach, belching, heartburn, indigestion, stomach discomfort , upset or pain
  • Somnolence, such as, sleepiness or unusual drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue, such as, unusual tiredness or weakness
  • Myalgia, such as, joint pain, swollen joints, muscle aching or cramping, muscle pains or stiffness, difficulty in moving Pharyngitis, such as, body aches or pain, congestion, cough, dryness or soreness of throat, fever, hoarseness, runny nose, tender swollen glands in neck, trouble in swallowing, voice changes
  • Dry mouth
  • Dysmenorrhea, such as, difficult or painful menstruation

  • Do not take Clarinex if you are allergic to desloratadine or to loratadine
  • Consult your doctor, if you have kidney or liver disease
  • Should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding


Dexona contains Dexamethasone, as an active ingredient which is a potent corticosteroid hormone. The drug works by altering the immune system reaction and triggering other metabolic effects. It is specially intended to treat conditions such as blood/hormone/immune system disorders, arthritis, certain skin and eye conditions, allergic reactions, certain bowel disorders, breathing problems, and certain cancers. Elocon contains mometasone furoate as an active ingredient that works on the mast cells and leukotrienes present in the nose so as to decrease and block allergic inflammation. It is an intranasal corticosteroid spray, highly effective for seasonal and year round (perennial) allergic rhinitis and nasal polyps. In addition to this, the medicine is also used to treat various skin conditions such as such as eczema, psoriasis, allergies and rash. It is a topical steroid that reduces the actions of chemicals in the body that cause inflammation.

Common side effects of using this medication are as follows:
  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Thinning of skin
  • Acne or pimples
  • Loss of elasticity
  • Raised, dark red, and wart-like spots on the skin

Incidence not known:
  • Burning and itching of the skin with pinhead-sized red blisters

Perictin contains Cyproheptadione or Ciplaciting as a main ingredient.   • Avoid alcohol while on medication as it can increase fatigue and can also worsen the drowsy effects of this medicine
  • Prior to the use of this medication, your doctor must know your medical history of
    • Heart disease
    • High blood pressure
    • Kidney disease
    • Seizures
    • Stomach/ intestine problems (such as ulcers, blockage)
    • Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
    • Difficulty urinating (for example, due to enlarged prostate)

Zyrtec is an approved antihistamine that is available without prescription. It is widely used to relieve allergy symptoms such as watery eyes, itching eyes/nose, runny nose, sneezing, hives, and itching. The main ingredient in the medicine is citrazine that reduces the effects of natural chemical histamin in the body. Optivar is highly recommended for topical administration to the eyes. It contains a relatively selective H1- receptor antagonist that contains azelastine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution. The composition contains 0.05% sterile ophthalmic solution with azelastine hydrochloride. It is indicated for the treatment of itching of the eye associated with allergic conjunctivitis.
