Cardio Vascular Medicines

Cardio Vascular Medicines is class of diseases that involve the heart or blood vessels. Some of the common diseases associated with it are stroke, ischemic heart disease (IHD), rheumatic heart disease (RHD), hypertensive heart disease, atrial fibrillation, congenital heart disease, aortic aneurysms, cardiomyopathy, endocarditis, and peripheral artery disease (PAD).
The medicines are highly effective in controlling blood and sugar level that is the major cause of heart attacks and strokes. The cardio vascular drugs basically belong to a group of medicines called ACE or angiotensin converting enzyme.

Aceon

Aceon (perindopril) is specially recommended for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) and to prevent heart attack in people with coronary artery disease. It belongs to a group of drugs called ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitors. This medicine is 2 mg, 4 mg and 8 mg strengths for oral administration. It is also intended for the treatment of congestive heart failure and to help protect the kidneys from damage due to diabetes.


Call your doctor immediately if you have:
  • Little or no urinating
  • Swelling, rapid weight gain
  • A light-headed feeling, like you might pass out
  • Pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • Fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms, sores in your mouth and throat
  • High potassium (slow heart rate, weak pulse, muscle weakness, tingly feeling)

Common side effects may include:
  • Dizziness
  • Back pain
  • Cough


Before taking the medication, consult your doctor in any of the following conditions:
  • If you are allergic to medicine or any of its ingredients or to other ACE inhibitors
  • If you have a history of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat (angioedema)
  • If you have a medical history of untreated salt/mineral imbalance (e.g., high potassium or low sodium levels in the blood), liver disease, loss of too much body water (dehydration), collagen vascular disease (e.g., lupus, scleroderma)
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • If you have a prolonged illness that causes diarrhea or vomiting
  • If you are diabetic and taking medication that contains aliskiren
  • If you have hereditary angioedema

Some important safety information:
  • Drinking alcohol can further lower your blood pressure and may increase certain side effects of perindopril
  • Do not use salt substitutes or potassium supplements while taking perindopril, unless your doctor has told you to
  • Conditions that may cause very low blood pressure include: vomiting, diarrhea, heavy sweating, heart disease, dialysis, a low salt diet, or taking diuretics (water pills)

Adalat

Adalat contain the active ingredient nifedipine belongs to a group of medicine called calcium channel blockers (CCBs). This medicine is useful in the treatment of treatangina (heart pain), high blood pressure, and abnormal heart rhythms. This drug works effectively by blocking the flow of calcium into the muscle cells surrounding the arteries that supply blood to the heart (coronary arteries) as well as other arteries of the body. This medicine is also recommended to dilate blood vessels that go into spasm such as those causing Raynaud's phenomenon, a painful condition of the hands caused by spasm of the arteries supplying blood to the hands.


Call your doctor in any of the following side effects:
  • Feeling short of breath, swelling in your hands or feet
  • Fast or pounding heartbeats
  • Worsening angina
  • Severe constipation and cramps, severe stomach pain or heartburn, coughing up blood
  • Feeling like you might pass out
  • Chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling
  • Numbness or tingly feeling
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)

Some of the common side effects:
  • Drowsiness, tired feeling
  • Headache, dizziness
  • Mild rash or itching
  • Joint pain, leg cramps
  • Nausea, diarrhea mild constipation or stomach pain
  • Sleep problems (insomnia)
  • Warmth, redness, or tingly feeling under your skin
  • Urinating more than usual


Avoid the medication and consult your doctor in the following conditions:
  • If you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies
  • If you have a medical history of if you have kidney or liver disease, a blockage in your digestive tract (stomach or intestines), a history of stomach surgery, coronary artery disease, underactive thyroid, diabetes, or congestive heart failure
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding

Some important safety information:
  • Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness as the medicine may cause dizziness
  • Limit alcoholic beverages while on the medication
  • Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially dizziness, constipation, or swelling ankles/ feet

Adalat Cc

Adalat Cc is an extended release tablet dosage form of the nifedipine that belongs to a group of medicines called calcium channel blocker. It is intended for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina (chest pain) by relaxing the muscles of your heart and blood vessels.


Call your doctor at once if you have:
  • Worsening angina
  • Swelling in your ankles or feet
  • Upper stomach pain, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • A light-headed feeling, like you might pass out
  • Pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest
  • Chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the jaw or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling

Common side effects may include:
  • Mild dizziness
  • Tremors, muscle cramps
  • Cough, wheezing, sore throat, stuffy nose
  • Flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling)
  • Weakness, headache, mood changes
  • Heartburn, nausea


Consult your doctor in any of the following conditions:
  • If you are allergic to it, or to other calciumchannel blockers (e.g., felodipine, amlodipine)
  • If you have a medical history, especially of heartproblems (e.g., congestive heart failure, aortic stenosis), liver problems, kidney problems, a certain metabolic disorder (porphyria)
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding

Some important safety information:
  • Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medication
  • This drug may make you dizzy, hence, do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness
  • Limit the intake of alcohol
  • During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed
  • You may need to use blood pressure medication for the rest of your life

Aggrenox

Aggrenox contains a combination of aspirin and dipyridamole and is speically recommended for reducing the risk of stroke in people who have had blood clots or a "mini-stroke" (also called a transient ischemic attack or TIA). In this medicine, aspirin belongs to a group of drugs called salicylates (sa-LIS-il-ates) and it reduces substances in the body that cause pain, fever, and inflammation, while on the other hand, dipyridamole, keeps the platelets in your blood from sticking together to form clots.


Some of the common side effects associated with this medicine are:
  • Upset stomach, mild heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Weakness or fainting
  • Joint pain
  • Drowsiness
  • Black, bloody, or tarry stools
  • Swelling or pain lasting longer than 10 days
  • Hearing problems, ringing in your ears
  • Coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Severe nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain
  • Fever lasting longer than 3 days


Do not take this medicine, in any of the following conditions:
  • If you are allergic to ASA, dipyridamole, or any of the ingredients of the medication
  • If you are allergic to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • If you are intolerant to fructose or galactose
  • If you have asthma, rhinitis, or nasal polyps
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • If you are taking over the counter medicines containing aspirin, salicylates, and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
  • If you are a child or teenager suffering from fever
  • If you have any symptoms of bleeding in your stomach or intestines

Altace

Altace contains ramipril as its active ingredient. It belongs to a group of medicines called ACE inhibitor or angiotensin converting enzyme. These medicines are recommended for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) or congestive heart failure, and to improve survival after a heart attack. This drug basically lowers blood pressure by reducing the production of angiotensin II, thereby relaxing arterial muscle and enlarging arteries.


Call your doctor at once if you have:
  • Little or no urinating, or urinating more than usual
  • A light-headed feeling, like you might pass out
  • Chest pain
  • Sudden weakness or ill feeling, fever, chills, sore throat, painful mouth sores, pain when swallowing, skin sores, cold or flu symptoms
  • High potassium (slow heart rate, weak pulse, muscle weakness, tingly feeling)

Common side effects may include:
  • Cough
  • Headache
  • Dizziness, weakness, tired feeling


  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant
  • Avoid drinking alcohol as it can lower your blood pressure and may increase some of the side effects
  • Do not use salt substitutes or potassium supplements while on the medicine
  • Tell your doctor if you have a prolonged illness that causes diarrhea or vomiting or symptoms like heavy sweating, dehydration, a low salt diet, or taking diuretics (water pills)
  • Your blood pressure and kidney or liver function will need to be checked often
  • You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time before the surgery
  • If you are being treated for high blood pressure, keep using this medication even if you feel fine
  • Consult your doctor if you have a medical history of an allergic reaction which includes blood filtering procedures (such as LDL apheresis, dialysis), swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat (angioedema), collagen vascular disease (such as lupus, scleroderma) and high level of potassium in the blood

Bystolic

Bystolic is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) that further may lower your risk of a stroke or heart attack. It contains an active ingredient nebivolol that belongs to a group of drugs called beta-blockers. These drugs directly affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins). It is also intended to prevent chest pain (angina), heart failure and to improve survival after a heart attack.


Some severe side effects that need medical attention:
  • Feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion
  • Swelling of your ankles or feet
  • Slow or uneven heartbeats
  • Numbness or cold feeling in your hands and feet

Less serious Bystolic side effects may include:
  • Nausea, stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Tired feeling
  • Sleep problems (insomnia)


  • Do not skip doses or stop taking Bystolic without consulting your doctor as it may make your condition worse or cause other serious heart problems such as severe chest pain or heart attack
  • If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using this medicine
  • Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert, as this medicine may impair your thinking or reactions
  • Bystolic is only part of a complete program of treatment that also includes diet, exercise, and weight control. Follow your diet, medication, and exercise routines very closely
  • Keep using this medication as directed, even if you feel well as high blood pressure often has no symptoms

Avoid the medication in any of the following conditions:
  • If you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the drug
  • If you have a medical history of blood circulation problems (such as Raynaud's disease, peripheral vascular disease), breathing problems (such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema), heart problems (such as heart failure, previous heart attack, heart rhythm problems), kidney problems, liver problems, mental/mood disorders (such as depression), a certain muscle disease (myasthenia gravis), overactive thyroiddisease (hyperthyroidism), serious allergic reactions, including those needing treatment with epinephrine

Calan

Calan belongs to a group of medicines called calcium ion influx inhibitor that are basically slow-channel blocker or calcium ion antagonist. It contains verapamil HCL as its active ingredient that is used with or without other medications to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and chest pain (angina). Further, this drug also helps to lower the heart rate, helping you to feel more comfortable and increase your ability to exercise. It works by slowing the electrical conduction in the heart, slowing heart rate, and/or normalizing heart rhythm.


Some of the common side effects:
  • Fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash
  • Restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw, or neck
  • Fast or slow heartbeats
  • Feeling like you might pass out
  • Feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion
  • Swelling, rapid weight gain
  • Nausea, stomach


Important safety information:
  • Alcohol, hot weather, exercise or fever may increase the side effects such as cause dizziness, light-headedness or fainting
  • Do not take more than the recommended dose or alter your dose without consulting your doctor
  • Talk with your doctor, if you have less appetite than normal, increased thirst, severe diarrhea, unusual sweating, or vomiting as these may increase the risk of blood electrolyte problems
  • Tell your doctor or dentist that you are on this medication before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care or surgery
  • It may cause dizziness or light-headedness and this can get worse if you take it with alcohol
  • Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it
  • Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Calan before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery
  • Do not suddenly stop taking this medicine as it cause some serious problems like irregular heartbeat, sharp chest pain and sometimes heart attack may occur
  • Keep a regular check on your blood pressure and heart rate
  • You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of taking this medicine while you are pregnant
  • Caution should be taken for elderly patients and children
  • Lab tests, including liver function, kidney function, complete blood cell counts, electrocardiogram (ECG), and blood pressure, may be performed while you use Calan

Do not use this medicine:
  • If you are allergic to any ingredient in Calan
  • If you have shock due to serious heart problems
  • If you are taking dofetilide, or you have taken disopyramide within the past 48 hours
  • If you have certain heart problems (eg, left ventricular dysfunction, sick sinus syndrome, second- or third-degree heart block and do not have a pacemaker), very low blood pressure, or moderate to severe congestive heart failure (CHF)
  • If you have atrial fibrillation or flutter and a pre-excitation syndrome (extra conduction pathway in the heart), such as Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome or Lown-Ganong-Levine (LGL) syndrome

Calan Sr

  • Skin rash or itching
  • Constipation, nausea

You should stop the medicine:
  • If you have a serious heart condition such as "sick sinus syndrome" or "AV block", severe heart failure, slow heartbeats that have caused you to faint, or certain heart rhythm disorders of the atrium
  • IIf you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies as it may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems
  • IIf you have certain types of heart rhythm problems (such as second- or third-degree atrioventricular block, sick sinus syndrome unless you have a pacemaker, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, Lown-Ganong-Levine syndrome)
  • IIf you have a medical history of liver disease, kidney disease, heart failure, certain muscle/nerve disorders (muscular dystrophy, myasthenia gravis)
  • IIf you are pregnant or breastfeeding

Some important safety information:
  • This drug may make you dizzy and this can get worst if you take it with alcohol
  • Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness while on the medication
  • Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially constipation, or swelling ankles/feet
